The Initiative and Leadership on the Economic Front has to be Implemented by Ukrainians

Cooperation with international institutions is very important, but the initiative and leadership on the economic front must come from Ukrainians.

“Decisions that will concern our country should be prepared by us, then they will be strong. Then, they will be accepted by the international community,” said Vitaliy Melnychuk, Vice President of Kinto Investment Company, Associate Professor of the National University Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, Member of Parliament of Ukraine of the first convocation, at a panel discussion “Finances of a terrorist country: how to confiscate?” at the Ukraine-Universe Media Centre.

Cooperation with international organizations is important, but very The issue of cooperation with international organisations is important, but very controversial. The problems of sanctions pressure should be raised globally for solution through the UN Security Council, including the recognition of russia as an aggressor and, accordingly, punishment for those crimes. But russia is in the Security Council today. Moreover, today it is even the chairman.

The UN General Assembly’s decision dated 14 November 2022 to hold russia accountable for its aggression and to recover reparations could become a tool for such sanctions pressure. Accordingly, a list of these countries that voted in favour has been identified and made public. Therefore, I propose to develop a collective international agreement with the participation of these countries declaring joint economic and legal actions against the aggressor country.

Cooperation with international institutions is very important, but the initiative and leadership on the economic front must come from Ukrainians. That is why I propose to create a governmental group consisting of representatives of the Ministry of Justice, the NAPC, the Ministry of Finance, other institutions, academics, and NGOs to work on proposals and even draft legislative decisions. Such proposals should be submitted to our partners. “Our proposals should be detailed and balanced. Advocacy of such decisions is the next step, but this work is primarily for us to perform,” said Vitaliy Melnychuk.
